China has recalled six diplomats to avoid them being questioned over the beating of a protester in Manchester, England.

Britain had asked the Chinese to waive diplomatic immunity for the six officials so they could be questioned. The diplomats included the Consul General Zheng Xiyuan who admitted to tearing the hair from the scalp of Bob Chan, a former Hong Konger who was protesting against Chinese President Xi Jinping’s crackdown on the peninsula in October.

The UK government has been under pressure to expel Zheng and the other diplomats who emerged from the consulate that day, wearing riot gear and dragging Chan and others onto their diplomatic grounds where they beat them, in broad daylight.Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said the British had asked the Chinese to waive diplomatic immunity for the six officials so they could be questioned by Manchester Police.
