While Ontarians have been slow to take up the latest COVID-19 boosters or voluntarily re-embrace masking, respiratory viruses are creating a “triple threat” that is posing challenges for the health care system, especially when it comes to treating children.
Last week, public health officials reported the start of a flu epidemic, with levels of influenza higher than in previous years.
The same message about vaccinations is echoed by the Canadian Paediatric Society, which on Friday urged families to make sure everyone in their household gets vaccinated against the flu, especially for families with young children. Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said at a news conference Friday that the current increased viral transmission in the pediatric age group could result in greater viral spread among seniors and those who are most vulnerable.
“Vaccination for adults is where you get bang for your buck for influenza,” he said, yet according to the Ministry of Health, typically only three in 10 Ontarians are vaccinated for influenza each year, despite them being 60 to 70 per cent effective for young adults.
