COVID-19 was the third highest cause of death in Australia last year, as the virus became the first infectious disease to feature in the top five causes since 1970.
Data released on Wednesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed COVID-19 accounted for more than one in 20 deaths, or 9,859, in 2022.
The Omicron variant, a more virulent strain of the disease which dominated Australia last year, was largely responsible for the spike in deaths, the ABS data showed. In 2020, the virus was the 38th leading cause of death, while it was only the 33rd in 2021 before jumping 30 places to reach third last year.
Aside from COVID-19, the other leading causes of death in Australia remained unchanged, with heart disease topping the rankings, followed by dementia - including Alzheimer's disease.
