A text message conversation between Coutts Mayor Jim Willett and then Alberta transportation minister Rajan Sawhney, entered into evidence at the commission into the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act.

In text messages discussed at the inquiry Wednesday between Willett and an Alberta journalist, the mayor further expressed his wish to have the protesters branded as domestic terrorists.“When I look for the definition of a domestic terrorist, these people seem to fit that bill and yet no one ever labelled them that,” he said.

The blockade put a stranglehold on the 224-person village of Coutts from Jan. 29 to Feb. 14., restricting commercial access across the Coutts-Sweetgrass border crossing — Alberta’s busiest trade route.Article content
