Former competition chief Allan Fels recommended divestiture powers in a review of price gouging and unfair practices commissioned by the ACTU.“We think that what the government should do is have a permanent price commission, where a commission has power to monitor and investigate pricing practices,” Ms McManus said.
“Large supermarkets operate with high fixed costs and intricate supply chains. The most likely outcome of any forced divestment would be to disrupt the economies of scale retailers have painstakingly built,” he said.
