Andrew Stokes was swept up in two avalanches in the Tablelands
Andrew Stokes of Corner Brook relies on information provided through Avalanche Canada’s avalanche forecast and Mountain Information Network to make decisions about where he will and won’t venture while enjoying the backcountry. - ContributedCORNER BROOK, N.L. — Andrew Stokes learned a few lessons the hard way when it comes to avalanche safety.Around 2002-2003 when he was getting into backcountry skiing Stokes took a Level 1 avalanche skills training course.
It took two close calls where he was engulfed in an avalanche and swept down the mountain in the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park for him to change his way of thinking. “What I realized after those experiences was that you've really got to be honest with yourself out there,” he said. The area Stokes found himself in trouble is covered by an avalanche forecast that is produced by Avalanche Canada’s Newfoundland field team.
