$12.7 million construction project intended for Alberton, Kensington and Mount Stewart

Housing Minister Matthew Mackay, left, and Kensington Mayor Rowan Caseley show designs for of the planned housing units announced for P.E.I. – Kristin Gardiner/SaltWire NetworkKENSINGTON, P.E.I. — The construction of 26 new public housing units in three P.E.I. communities will not solve the Island's housing crisis singlehandedly – but Kensington mayor Rowan Caseley believes it’s a step in the right direction.

Kensington Mayor Rowan Caseley is excited to hear that 10 social housing units are planned in his town. – Kristin Gardiner Although Kensington struggles at times to keep up with its demand for housing, Caseley said “it’s great” to see progress being made. This social housing announcement, said MacKay, is one of several the province expects to announce in the next six months. The longer-term plan, he told SaltWire Network, aims to bring the housing vacancy rate to four per cent.

“We’ve known for a long time now that we don’t have the numbers for housing with our population growth,” said MacKay.
