Police officers’ ‘bittersweet’ escape from Wieambilla shooting was a ‘miracle’Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll says she is “eternally grateful” two police officers escaped the Wieambilla shooting and has rallied the community to support them as they process the deaths of their friends. Police officers Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold were killed by two gunmen in an ambush on a rural property in the state’s Western Downs region. Commissioner Carroll said the escape by the two police officers is “bittersweet” as the pair had to watch their friends die in front of them. “I walked the crime scene yesterday and I cannot believe how two people actually survived,” she told Sky News Australia. “It was a very difficult scene to walk, it was clearly a very difficult area to be confronted by gunmen and the fact two people survived is a miracle.”
