On the same day, Canada’s cyberdefence agency, the Communications Security Establishment , published new guidance calling on Canadians to be weary of a social media platform’s “ownership, control or influence, and data residency” as well as data collecting and use policies.Article content “The vendors and owners of the platform are subject to the laws of their region, which could impact the security and privacy of users,” reads the guidance, which doesn’t explicitly mention TikTok but is clearly referring to sweeping new laws that allow the Chinese Communist Party to compel any business in the country to share data with it if required.
A growing chorus of experts have called on the federal government to ban TikTok from its networks in light of increasing concerns that the app engages in “aggressive” data harvesting. MPs and their staffers’ phones hold a trove of important personal data, like the elected official’s calendar, emails or contact list, for example.
