OPINION: The federal government is confident it has the public on side with its intervention in the energy market. The gas industry’s warnings aren’t getting much traction.
The Albanese government leaves Canberra this year confident it has finally got the domestic politics of energy right. Itsto gas companies and their complaints corresponds with Labor’s belief it has the public on side.
The gas industry’s warnings about the devastating impact on future investment and supply – and eventually prices – are conveniently remote from most people’s immediate concerns. For now, it’s easier for people to applaud the government for taking action to protect Australians from the behaviour of big gas companies“Gas companies have the right to make a profit, and we want them to,” Jim Chalmers told the special sitting of parliament. “They have a job to do, and we have a job to do as well.
Chalmers should also congratulate whoever came up with the name of the “reasonable pricing” mechanism as part of a mandatory code of conduct that will extend indefinitely beyond the 12-month gap on gas and coal prices.
