Glimmers of hope for Shanghai residents but new threats to Beijing and other cities.

As Shanghai enters its fifth week of a hard lockdown which has confined tens of millions of people inside tiny apartments without fresh air or sunlight, there are faint glimmers of hope.

Anecdotal evidence suggests some are self-testing positive at home but not reporting it to the government.Meanwhile, Beijing is on edge with many businesses closed and streets empty for a five-day Labour Day holiday, as case numbers rise there but remain low enough so far to avoid a citywide lockdown.

The brutality of Shanghai’s lockdown, which saw residents of China’s richest and most socially progressive city relying on government food handouts has shocked many. While expatriates, including many Australians, are leaving in droves, some Chinese citizens without such a luxury say they now view their government in a different light.

“The virus was more deadly then, but nobody had to fight for food during the Wuhan lockdown and logistics were still working,” said the woman, who wanted to be identified as Ms Mei.
