: Concern was growing for ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday as Azerbaijani forces tightened their grip on the breakaway region.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that Washington had “deep concern” for ethnic Armenians there, in a phone call Saturday, a spokesman said. A US congressional delegation was in Armenia to show support for the embattled Pashinyan and to inspect the region’s blockade.
On Saturday, the Azerbaijan forces showed off part of the captured rebel arsenal: sniper rifles, Kalashnikov rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and four tanks painted with cross insignia.Troops have mortar positions on high ground overlooking the approach to the nearby regional capital Stepanakert, AFP reporters saw.
“I’ve been here for three days and nights, sleeping in my car,“ said 28-year-old Garik Zakaryan, as displaced Armenians borrowed a soldier’s telescope to scan a village across the valley. Some villagers also set fire to their homes before fleeing after Azerbaijan first began to re-establish control over parts of Nagorno-Karabakh in a six-week war in 2020.
