Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers says three innocent people have lost their lives simply by “doing the right thing” after two police officers and a man were killed in an “unexpected” attack.
Four police officers were ambushed as they attended a rural property in Wieambilla in Queensland’s Western Downs region on Monday afternoon.
Two police officers were instantly killed by two alleged gunmen after hopping over the fence of the property.Mr Leavers said the officers attended a “routine” missing person call for service, on behalf of NSW Police, and there was “no evidence” to suggest the four would be met with a “hail of gunfire”.“It took police by surprise and they had no idea their lives were tragically going to be cut short,” he told Sky News Australia.
“The two other police officers, how they survived I will never know … we could have had four murdered police officers, but we have two.”
