Canada’s competition watchdog says the country’s grocery business is too concentrated and government intervention is needed to support the emergence of new competitors.
In a report released Tuesday, the Competition Bureau called on the government to develop a “grocery innovation strategy” that would focus on attracting “new businesses that want to disrupt how the industry works, including by selling groceries to Canadians online.” “Governments at all levels should work together to encourage the emergence of new types of grocery businesses that are willing to take risks to shake things up,” the bureau said.
