The City of Oshawa is turning 100 next year and a committee is trying to raise enough money to install a large illuminated “Oshawa” sign in time for the centennial celebration.“It’s going to be at the north Parkette, which is situated at the corner of Centre Street South and King Street [West], very close to city hall,” explained Bremner.“Other cities have huge illuminated signs, including Barrie, Hamilton, Kingston and of course, Toronto’s famous Nathan Phillips Square,” said Eismont.
The sign would cost $500,000 and it would be community funded. The city is supporting the work of the Oshawa Sign Team and would assume the estimated maintenance cost of $85,000 per year. Those who donate to the sign initiative will also receive a tax receipt. In order for the sign to become a reality, $350,000 will have to be raised by June 1 and another $125,000 will have to be raised by September 1.
The city will be controlling all the donations and if not enough money is raised, it will be returned to the donors. If you have found a spelling error, please, notify us by selecting that text and pressing
