Matt Dusk sings Sinatra in Halifax/PEI/Moncton | SaltWireClearly, the flood of traumatized migrants from Haiti, Venezuela and Colombia, to name a few countries, are creating a major political problem for U.S. President Joe Biden.
In an effort to stem the flow of migrants, Biden has put pressure on Mexico and other Latin American countries to do their part. What he really wants is for governments in the region to disrupt and dissuade struggling people to even contemplate heading northward for supposedly greener pastures. There have been reports in the country of rising crime levels, some rioting and a greater demand on the country’s limited immigration and financial resources. President Rodrigo Chaves has made it very clear that his security authorities will “take a firm stance with anyone who takes Costa Rica’s kindness for weakness.”
What we have seen in Latin America, though, are a few consistent drivers of migration: poverty, political corruption/repression and drug and gang violence. With employment opportunities and liveable wages scarce, along with little to no access to basic health care and educational services, it is no wonder that people from Ecuador, Honduras and Guatemala are searching for hope and the good life elsewhere.
There are plenty of folks at the U.S. federal and state levels who think they know how to fix the immigration problem. But if they were truly honest with themselves, they would admit to not knowing what they are talking about. Republican politicians, in particular, know that they have a political winner by hammering away on the issue and opposing substantial U.S. immigration reform.
