ICYMI: COMMENTARY: A collective effort needed to tackle mental health and addictions | SaltWire
, led by Karen Cumberland, was developed from government and it’s now its own standalone entity. It is designed to work collaboratively with community resources and the public and private sectors to help find sustainable solutions and create more upstream thinking and early intervention approaches to mental health and addiction issues. They are committed to an “everyone’s voice matters” solution that is truly integrated. This demonstrates to me that the Government of P.E.I.
Why does this matter to me? I was born and raised on P.E.I. and did my first university degree at the University of P.E.I. Many of my family members live there and I am home often. Because P.E.I. is my home and is one of the most beautiful and grounded places on earth, I care deeply for the people there. Islanders are the most caring people I know, who are always willing to roll up their sleeves and help others.
I know firsthand that if we help people build their capacity to work through challenging situations, they can come through it in a positive way.In April 2022, Paul McNeil and Rachel Collier wrote four in-depth articles on concerns on P.E.I. with mental health and addictions in the Eastern Graphic. In one of those articles, they talked about some potential solutions and referenced the work I have led in building resiliency through integrated services with healthcare, education and housing.
That is the reality of life. We all face ups and downs, but it’s important to understand why some cope better than others through adversity. It is in us all to have compassion and be supportive but truly understanding how brains develop and what long-term persistent trauma does to brain development is the human story. The more we understand that, the more proactive we can be in our approach. Let’s let evidence guide what works.
