The Commission on Elections ( Comelec ) has set up checkpoints across the country starting this Sunday, marking the beginning of the election period for the May midterm elections . The checkpoints are manned by Philippine National Police personnel. Comelec Chairman George Garcia said authorities will implement the 'plain view doctrine' where they will only look at anything visible from outside vehicles. Drivers only need to lower their windows and turn on the interior lights while passing through.

Drivers are not obligated to open their glove compartment, trunk, or bags unless there is a clear legal reason. Through these checkpoints, authorities will monitor public compliance with the gun ban, which also began this Sunday. The police and Comelec reminded drivers to cooperate with the implementation of the checkpoints. \In Daet, Camarines Norte, despite the red rainfall warning issued by PAGASA for the entire province, checkpoint operations continued. Checkpoints began in various towns of Camarines Norte at 8:00 AM. Individuals caught violating the gun ban or carrying any type of deadly weapon without proper authorization from the Comelec will be immediately arrested and charged accordingly. The midterm national and local elections will be held on May 12.
