Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia supports the Iglesia Ni Cristo's (INC) nationwide peace rally but warns against politicians using it for personal gain. Garcia emphasizes the rally's noble intention for faith and unity, urging participants to prioritize national issues over self-interest.
MANILA, Philippines — Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia on Monday expressed support to the Iglesia Ni Cristo's ( INC ) nationwide peace rally but he cautioned political candidates not to use the gathering for their personal interest.Garcia said the INC had all the good intentions in organizing the rally but this should not be taken advantage of by grandstanding politicians or 'epalitiko' to jumpstart their campaign for the May 12, 2025 national and local elections.
'Isang pagsasama-sama para sa pananampalataya at pagkakaisa po ito. Kasapi po tayo sa kapatiran ng Iglesia sa kanilang napakabuting hangarin. Hindi dapat sinasamantala ng ilan para sa pansariling kapakanan. Iwasang maging epalitiko (This is a rally for faith and unity. We are one with the Iglesia Ni Cristo on this noble intention. This should not be used for personal interest),' Garcia said in a viber message to reporters. In an earlier statement, the INC said they organized the rally for peace and unity in support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s call against the impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte at the House of Representatives.Despite their differences, the Chief Executive has expressed his strong opposition to the impeachment bid against Duterte. The INC said the country has many pressing problems and relevant issues that need to be prioritized and addressed. On Monday, Malacañang, through Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, said that the INC national rally for peace would bring clarity to the issues the country faces.'We view today's assemblies as part of the national conversation we should be having as a people to bring clarity and consensus on issues that face us all and affect our future,' Bersamin said
