Tom Douglas shares a story about finding a Soo Mill and Lumber Co. Ltd. butcher block while travelling in Far North Queensland, Australia in the 1970s and the remarkable links to his beloved Sault
This was the logo stamped into the huge butcher block in a small shop I had stopped into to buy some hamburger meat. What had caused me to do a double take as I casually watched the butcher in a small main street shop feed chunks of beef into a hand grinder was that Soo Mill and Lumber – today known as Soo Mill Buildall – was about as geographically far away from where I was standing as it could possibly be.
Not surprisingly, we had a number of adventures along the way but finally arrived at our destination a bit bruised and battered but ready to celebrate Christmas with Gail Alexander Madell, a medical doctor originally from Oakville, Ont. Gail seemed as surprised as we were that we had made the long trek without having been flattened by one of the huge transports that had breezed by us on a narrow strip of highway all along the way.
So bright and early the morning after our arrival, I went in search of the fixings for our hamburger feast. It turned out that the hardest commodities to come up with were prepared mustard and ketchup – which actually required a 65 km scooter ride to the relative metropolis of Cairns where I picked up the condiments at a department store. I had promised a genuine hamburger with all the trimmings and I was determined to make good on that promise.
So what was a Soo Mill butcher block doing in a small shop in a far-off land on the other side of the world? The butcher didn’t know when I put the question to him, explaining that all the equipment in the store had been part of the sale when the previous owner retired.
