The Surf Coast Shire has triggered outrage after hiring a litter maintenance officer to fine residents while refusing to pay locals to do residents’ dirty work.
For years, Victoria’s Surf Coast Shire council has threatened holidaymakers in the Great Ocean Road town of Lorne with $350 fines for leaving full wheelie bins on the kerbside for days before the garbage is due for collection.
“Bins left on the kerbside for extended periods attract wildlife, particularly cockatoos, which can create terrible litter problems in our beautiful towns like Lorne,” he said. For Charles Coates, who has lived in Lorne for 20 years, the situation has had a silver lining – he takes in bins for businesses and rentals at $20 a pop.Cockatoos have taken to Lorne since the Ash Wednesday bushfires 40 years ago.
Residents have also complained that bins on the foreshore are not emptied frequently enough during busy periods.“They go for the food of course, and it’s not a nice look – you’re going down the road and the whole bin is spread over and there are nappies, and it’s not nice to see rubbish strewn all over near such a beautiful beach,” Mr Coates said.
