Expect a lot of ice along the northeast coast over the coming days as a persistent northeasterly flow pushes pack ice further south and onto the coast line.
Superintendent of icebreaking operations with the Canadian Coast Guard Atlantic, Brad Durnford, says they’re on the ready with the possibility that ice-breaking assistance will be needed on the Fogo Island, St. Brendan’s and Bell Island ferry runs over the next few days. He says the ice is already moving into Bonavista Bay and will push even further south over the next five days.Depending how heavily the ice packs in, they may have to deploy icebreakers to accompany the ferries and even marine traffic heading to and from St. John’s harbour.
