Singapore experienced one of its hottest years on record and about 35 per cent below average rainfall during the last strong El Nino event in 2015 and 2016.
This follows three years of La Nina conditions and comes seven years after the last strong El Nino event. The Met Service also predicted that a positive Indian Ocean Dipole event will develop during the same period.
"These include the warmer subsurface ocean temperatures observed in the eastern tropical Pacific, typically a precursor to El Nino events." "They disrupt the normal patterns of tropical precipitation and atmospheric circulation and are considered to be the opposite phases of air-sea interactions collectively referred to as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation ," WMO said on its website.
During an El Nino event, trade winds weaken, and warm water is pushed back east towards the west coast of the Americas, NOS said.
