The Country Liberal Party ran hard on issues that were affecting everyday Territorians, with a huge focus on community safety. Territory Labor, on the other hand, was completely out of touch.

When Shane Stone returned as Country Liberal Party president last year, the former chief minister was asked if his appointment was a hark back to the party's "old boys" mentality of the 1990s, when he was serving in NT Parliament."There's no second prize in politics – you win or you lose.

But the results also tell the tale of two opposing election campaigns – one which proved it was in touch with the community, and another which very clearly wasn't in touch at all. When the CLP stormed Darwin's northern suburbs, they did so with fresh candidates from within the community, who spent months knocking on doors and speaking with voters.

"You don't need to arm your political opponents with the ability to go and tear down your candidates over a period of time."Quietly directing the party's campaign was Shlok Sharma from the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, who was also trying his luck as a candidate for the seat of Wanguri, in Darwin's suburbs.

Another electorate where a similar sentiment played out was Johnston, another previously safe Labor seat that was held by former Unions NT boss and ex-AFL player Joel Bowden. One of those was made clear in former chief minister's Eva Lawler's speech on Saturday night, after she conceded she'd lost both her job as member for Drysdale, and government.
