One of two ministers responsible for Victoria’s Commonwealth Games says she was kept in the dark about plans to axe the event, and did not mislead parliament.
One of Victoria’s two ministers responsible for the 2026 Commonwealth Games says she did not mislead parliament when she told it the government would deliver the “Games of a lifetime” a week after plans were initiated to axe the event because she did not know about them.
Harriet Shing, the former minister for Commonwealth Games legacy, has claimed she was in the dark for a week about the government’s plan to axe the event. Two days earlier, Ms Shing had told parliament Labor’s $2.6 billion budget would deliver the “Games of a lifetime”. That was nearly a week after former premier Daniel Andrews engaged lawyers to look at dropping the event.
“You expect us to believe that Daniel Andrews knew, Jacinta Allan knew, the secretaries knew, Daniel Andrews’ private office knew, but you, as minister responsible and the partner of Daniel Andrews’ chief of staff, knew nothing?” Mr Davis asked. Ms Allan has previously denied misleading parliament when she had said “tremendous progress” was being made in Victoria’s planning for the Games despite knowing the cost of the event would balloon by at least $2 billion. But she told a parliamentary hearing on June 13 that there wasand gave no indication that there were severe cost pressures.
