Experts say Canada set heat records for three days in a row last week, mainly because of heat waves in B.C. and Quebec.
The NOAA says the June global surface temperature was 1.05 C above the 20th-century average of 15.5 C. The agency says this marked the first time a June temperature was 1 C above the long-term average, and that eight of Earth’s hottest Junes have happened since 2015.
For example, with an average temperature 2.5 C above average, the U.K. had its warmest June since records began in 1884, according to the NOAA. Those records broke just as the average worldwide temperature reached 17.2 C — the hottest day on record — on Tuesday one day after hitting a record 17 C, according to the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine. The previous record of 16.9 C was set in August 2016.
