Oil slicks have spread to the waters of Pengerang in Johor, which is less than one hour away from Singapore by ferry.
SINGAPORE – Cleanup efforts are under way at two beaches in south-east Johor, following an oil spill incident on the southern coast of Singapore Island on June 14.observed off Changi on June 17,“Our Malaysian counterparts have informed us on 19 June that they have observed some oil slicks off Johor,” said MPA, adding: “We are sharing relevant information to facilitate their efforts.”
In a Facebook post on June 21, Johor’s health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said about 1km of Pengerang’s shoreline was affected. Traces of oil were found on the beaches at Sungai Rengit, a seafood coastal town, as well as Teluk Ramunia, a mining town. He added that the insurance company of a vessel involved in the June 14 incident had appointed a contractor to handle the cleanup. All costs will be borne by the insurer.
