Clayton Utz has decided not to renew the contract of chief executive partner Bruce Cooper and energy lawyer Emma Covacevich will take over from July 1.
A board meeting on Thursday voted to pass the baton to Ms Covacevich, who is now deputy chief executive partner, a role Mr Cooper filled for six years before he took over from Rob Cutler in 2020.He sought another three-year term, but Ms Covacevich, who is based in Brisbane, tapped into the growing mood at the firm for change. She will be the first female leader of Clayton Utz.and six offices across Australia.
Ms Covacevich began her career with Clayton Utz in 1999 as an articled clerk and was made partner in 2007. She had a two-year stint as General Counsel of Australia Pacific LNG from 2011-2013 before returning to the firm.In 2020, Ms Covacevich became one of two deputy chief executives, alongside Doug Bishop – the brother of former foreign minister Julie Bishop, who was a partner at the firm before entering politics.
