The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will perform at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on April 19

On May 5 the VRS will showcase seven members of the astonishing Kanneh-Mason family on the stage of the Orpheum. Cellist Sheku and pianist Isata have already separately wowed Vancouver audiences, now the rest of this remarkable musical clan will join them.

At first glimpse, George Hinchliffe’s Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain sounds like a Monty Python joke, akin perhaps to the celebrated Society for Putting Things on Top of Other Things. This is no accident. Dry wit in the British mode is the default setting for this octet of poker-faced strummers, following in the footsteps of the Bright Young Things of the 1920s, not to mention U.K. stage and film comedian George Formby, and Tiny Tim from Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.

The grandly named orchestra, formed in 1985, self-describes as “a group of all-singing, all-strumming players who believe that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation on the ukulele.” Since the ever-changing program is always freshly announced from the stage, you can never know just what to expect.
