Tensions flared between authorities and devotees during the annual Feast of Jesus Nazareno procession in Manila, leading to a physical altercation and injuries.
An altercation occurred between police officers and devotees at the Ayala Bridge during the Traslacion , the procession for the annual Feast of Jesus Nazareno in Manila on Thursday. Police requested devotees not to cross the bridge to prevent obstructing the path of the Jesus Nazareno image. However, some devotees refused and tried to push through the police barricade, resulting in a scuffle. Several devotees were cornered, and one police officer sustained at least four head blows.
The crowd swelled significantly at the bridge upon Jesus Nazareno's arrival, leading to the destruction of a street sign. Volunteer rescuers bravely assisted devotees requiring medical attention despite being trapped in the dense crowd. Devotees continued to follow the procession past the bridge, despite numerous individuals falling ill or getting injured throughout the event. Earlier, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported treating three people for injuries sustained while attempting to climb the andas, the wheeled carriage carrying the image. The Red Cross responded to over 111 patients in the early hours of the Feast of Jesus Nazareno on Thursday
