The City of St. John’s has put its hand out again to the feds for help with housing, but this time it’s for a lot more cash. Earlier in 2023, the federal government announced the Housing Accelerator Fund Action Plan, which was designed to accelerate housing development.

Since receiving that letter in early October, the city has significantly revised its application, which is now for over $18 million in funding. The revised action plan outlines nine initiatives the city would use the money for, including grants for the addition of backyard suites, microunits and tiny homes, an incentive program for purpose built rentals, a program to identify, prepare for development, and make available city-owned land to non-profit housing providers and initiative to allow more density in the city of St. John’s.

The initial application the city submitted was hoped to facilitate in the building of 91 homes and this revised application bumps that number up to 475. Ellsworth said that this doesn’t mean the city will be building homes but would be the conduit for the federal government in facilitating it, since the city is closest to community partners and initiatives that are happening.
