The smuggled weed packed into sealed tins of calaloo, a Jamaican green vegetable, and akee fruit was transported via three separate consignments addressed to VCM between March and May 2017.
The 50- and 45-year-old “spent some time in Jamaica when the importations were made, handling money and providing shipping documentation to VCM” via the 64-year-old, NCA reports., the lead government department for immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime, fire, counter-terrorism and police. The trio was arrested on May 23 of that year while NCA the third consignment was being inspected.
The three men “cynically used a Christian ministry as a smokescreen to import huge quantities of cannabis into the U.K.,” NCA operations manager Rick Mackenzie says in the statement, adding the trio “wrongly believed” the tack would put them beyond the reach of the NCA and its law enforcement partners.
“This seizure and others like it send a clear message to anyone considering attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country that we remain committed and prepared to tackle drug supply chains,” adds Paul Harper, B.F.’s assistant director of inland border command.
