Authorities in Beijing have given Chinese students just a couple of weeks to pack up, get a visa and return to their overseas university or their degree won’t be recognised.
Chinese students enrolled in Western universities have been told to book flights and get themselves back to campus for face-to-face teaching before the new academic year begins.the directive from education department officials in Beijing means that many tens of thousands of students will be rushing to get visas approved, flights booked and accommodation found, adding pressure to an already over-heated rental market.
Around 700,000 Chinese students travel to overseas universities to study each year, mainly to the US, UK, Canada and Australia. A total of 150,000 were enrolled in Australian institutions mid-last year, of which the lion’s share were university students. With three years of lockdowns and online learning, a large number of Chinese students won’t yet have stepped foot inside Australia.
Vicki Thomson, chief executive of the Group of Eight universities which enrol more than three-quarters of all Chinese students in Australia, said she was concerned about the impact on students who had expected to keep studying online for at least another semester.
