Former Liberal MP Dave Sharma says China is willing to “take the risks of miscalculation” after its warship dangerously cut in front of a US destroyer in international waters.
“China may worry about miscalculation but for them their bigger concern is having any foreign presence within their first island chain within their close maritime borders and waterways,” he told Sky News Australia.
“They will take the risks of miscalculation and they’re pushing back against any attempts by the US or Australia to establish so-called guard rails. “They’re not interested – they think the best guard rail is to get Western forces out of the Western Pacific.”
