China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian has been moved to a less prominent role in what is seen as the end of an era for Beijing’s “wolf warrior” diplomats.
| China’s most prominent “wolf warrior” diplomat, Zhao Lijian, has been sidelined to a lower-profile position within the country’s Foreign Ministry, in the latest signal that Beijing will ease up on the aggressive foreign policy rhetoric that frequently targeted Australia.after he posted a doctored image of an Australian soldier threatening to cut the throat of an Afghan boy.
In March 2020, he said in a tweet that the US army might have introduced COVID-19 to Wuhan, which further inflamed tensions with the Trump administration at a time when global concern about the virus was at its peak. He has also angered senior US officials with tweets about race relations.Mr Zhao’s move follows the appointment of Qin Gang, China’s ambassador in Washington, as foreign minister.
There has been a significant change of tone since Xi Jinping met Joe Biden and other world leaders, including Anthony Albanese, at the G20 summit in Bali in November. Foreign Minister Penny Wong was also welcomed in Beijing in December.
