China's ambassador to Australia has reflected on an 'extraordinary year' for the relationship between the two countries as he heaped praise on the Albanese Government during a media address.

During an address to media in Canberra on Tuesday, Xiao Qian described 2022 as an"extraordinary year" for the relationship between Australia and China, with a number of crucial meetings taking place after a diplomatic freeze.

The ambassador went on to hail the meeting between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia in November as"constructive" and"productive".

"The second key word I'd like to say is the leaders' meeting. Based on the consensus reached between the two sides after a couple of months of communications, we had a very successful bilateral meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Albanese," Mr Xiao said. "It set up the tone for the relationship between our two countries. It set up the future directions for the future relationship.

Mr Xiao said"there was a wide range of issues" covered and they"reached a lot of consensus", with the meeting providing the"guideline for the future" of Australia-China relations.
