BEIJING - China is likely to stand by Russian President Vladimir Putin, even as a dramatic but short-lived mutiny in Russia over the weekend put a dent in his hold on power, experts said.
The meeting was symbolically significant, said Dr Liu Minran, a lecturer in international political studies at the University of New South Wales Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy. With their shared view against United States hegemony in the international arena, China and Russia have cast themselves as strong partners in recent years, although Beijing has been cautious not to provide lethal aid for Russia’s war in Ukraine that broke out in February 2022.
The mutiny that unfolded over the weekend appeared to blow over after Mr Putin agreed to let Wagner chief and former ally Yevgeny Prigozhin accept exile to Belarus and avoid treason charges. On Sunday night, China’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement of support for Russia maintaining “national stability” following the “Wagner Group Incident”, calling the developments Moscow’s internal affair.International reports highlighting potential divisions within Russia were met with derision by the nationalistic Global Times tabloid on Sunday.
Historical analogies aside, China is unlikely to see an uprising similar to that of Russia’s, as the Communist Party has maintained an iron grip over the military.
