Xi Jinping says China is determined to 'safeguard state sovereignty' and 'oppose Taiwan independence' at its five-yearly congress meeting.
abc.net.au/news/xi-jinping-congress-meeting-opens-china/101540968President Xi Jinping has kicked-off the 20th congress of China's ruling Communist Party, a week-long event where he is widely expected to win a third leadership term and cement his place as the country's most powerful ruler since Mao Zedong.
On Taiwan, Mr Xi said, "we have resolutely waged a major struggle against separatism and interference, demonstrating our strong determination and ability to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity and oppose Taiwan independence". "Resolving the Taiwan issue is the Chinese people's own business, and it up to the Chinese people to decide," he said.
"The historical wheels of national reunification and national rejuvenation are rolling forward, and the complete reunification of the motherland must be achieved!" he added, to a long round of applause.
