China’s ambassador said the removal of a ban on Australian timber imports was significant for a number of reasons.
The Chinese government has extended an olive branch to Australia, saying it looks forward to hosting Anthony Albanese as soon as possible in Beijing and lifting a trade ban on $600 million worth of Australian imports, in the latest sign of a thaw in the previously frosty relationship.
Speaking before leaving for Hiroshima, Biden rejected claims his inability to travel to Australia for the planned Quad summit was a publicity win for China, which has not been invited to the G7.Declaring that “America is not a deadbeat nation”, Biden said it was imperative for him to return to the US following the G7 summit to help end the nation’s debt ceiling crisis.
The leaders at the G7 summit will discuss nuclear weapons, China’s economic coercion, Russia’s war in Ukraine and managing the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technology.China’s ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian said Beijing’s decision to lift a ban on Australian timber imports showed efforts to repair relations between Australia and its biggest trading partner were beginning to pay off.
