‘I know it’s near impossible to find childcare,’ says Liberal MHA Sarah Stoodley

JOHN'S, N.L. — For most new parents in Newfoundland and Labrador, the promise of affordable childcare is broken.
She originally took 12 months of maternity leave, but had to extend it to 18 months. That means she has to endure six months without any pay whatsoever. “When you look at the crisis that we currently have in our health-care system when it comes to lack of human resources, and it seems like there is a lot of people — doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals in particular that are off on maternity leave, and now they are unable to return back to the workplace because of lack of childcare,” Lane said.
However, Osborne’s colleague, Minister of Digital Government and Service NL Sarah Stoodley has commented on the issue on social media.“I know it’s near impossible to find childcare,” she wrote, and asked people to provide feedback about access to childcare on the EngageNL website for the 2023 budget.
Conway originally planned on taking 12 months off of work, but now she needs to extend her leave to 18 months, meaning she will go six months without pay or maternity leave benefits. “Childcare is a main topic of conversation for new parents. We don’t know what the solution is, but we need our provincial leaders to step up and help parents get back to work,” Stamp said in an email to SaltWire.
