Charlottetown Mutual Aid opens warming centre during cold snap after city officials decide against it | SaltWire

When members of Charlottetown Mutual Aid heard the City of Charlottetown wasn’t opening a warming centre ahead of the weekend’s bitter cold snap, they immediately stepped up to help.

Though other community organizations did set up warming spaces, SaltWire Network called Mayor Philip Brown on Feb. 4 to ask about the city’s decision.

In response to pushback that the Jack Blanchard shelter was a community operation with city volunteers, Brown was adamant there is no difference in outcomes. As of 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 4, there was no mention of Jack Blanchard Hall or other warming sites, and the last “news” item on the city’s website was from Feb. 2: “Canada Games Legacy Project Ready for Skaters to Enjoy.”
