Not-for-profit community youth centre on hiatus following complaints stemming from series of controversial TikTok videos made by The Klub's director in late August

A non-profit centre for two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-plus youth in Sault Ste. Marie has temporarily closed its doors amid complaints related to a series of since-deleted TikTok videos made by the centre’s director.

“We acknowledge the psychological harm and safety issues that speaking publicly about youth participants may pose, even when done anonymously,” reads an excerpt of the statement. “We acknowledge how a breach of confidentiality can put youth participants at risk of being misjudged by unsafe community members, friends and/or family if it were to occur.

She tells SooToday that her child was 11 years old when they attended The Klub a handful of times four years ago. After a series of back-and-forth emails, the board issued an apology to the mother via email Sept. 28, a day before the public statement was published on social media. “It almost looked like they had a lawyer write it. It didn’t actually acknowledge that Katrina had done anything wrong,” the mother said. “It didn’t acknowledge the seriousness of the issue. It seemed to chalk it up as a mistake and misjudgment and misuse of social media.
