Mass shootings have a pattern. Patterns have beginnings. In many ways Columbine was the first school shooting in the US, and its bloody legacy is writ large in every terrible headline.
The vagaries of where Easter settles itself year upon year are interesting. A concept all too familiar for those born on Christmas Day, or 9/11, Easter is instead an ad hoc collision into your life. The Christian celebration of death and renewal falls happenstance onto your birthday, your wedding anniversary, a milestone day.Or it tumbles onto the date your world shattered.
Although a crime that sporadically permeated the first half of the last century, mass shootings were rare. Until the 1st August 1966. What the murderers watched, the games they played, the music they listened to, the clothes they wore, simply what they thought about anything/everything. All of it was laid bare by journalists and editors seeking to answer difficult questions.
There is more to this crime than the weapons used to commit it. The script of coverage is fundamental to this blight, and fundamental to how it can change. The perpetrator knew this, and Amok became a mechanism to restore honour, in those who had been humiliated, or felt slighted by their community. This was their script.
