Residents ready if evacuation order is given

A photo posted to social media on the weekend by the Grand Falls-Windsor Fire Department shows forest-fire smoke in the distance. - ContributedGRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, N.L. — A change in wind direction that kept forest fires and suffocating smoke from advancing on Grand Falls-Windsor on Monday, Aug. 8, appeared to bring a sense of normalcy back to the central Newfoundland town, but there was a wide awareness among residents that things could change for the worse quickly.

“The update at 2 p.m. afternoon was that the fire is about 25 kilometres away from Grand Falls-Windsor, so that means its progress in the past 24 hours has been minimal,” Manuel said. “And it is good news because they expected differently based on the forecast . The winds are favourable , but as we know the winds can change in an instant and if the winds were to change and blow towards the community, it wouldn’t be long before we’d be back into a more dire state.

With the area in a state of emergency and people encouraged to be prepared to evacuate, Snow says it’s a comfort knowing provincial and local officials, and firefighting teams, are on top of it. “You will be accommodated there until it is safe to return,” the town’s Facebook page advisory states.Donna Archibald said her mother was admitted to the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre on Friday and she got word on Monday that her mother was being transferred to Carbonear.
