‘Challenging’: Australian rescuers arrive in Turkey with 22 tonnes of equipment and their own tools

As the death toll from the Türkiye and Syria quake exceeds 35,000, Australian firefighters, doctors and paramedics are joining the desperate search and rescue missions.

, it is expected the death toll will rise further. More than 105,000 are injured and many tens of thousands are homeless in both countries.

“We have crews in the field assisting local management authorities conducting search and rescue operations in the hope of finding live survivors of this disaster,” he said.“We’re currently conducting search and rescue missions at the request and direction of the local and emergency management authority, AFAD, in country.

Rescuers have also taken their own jackhammers, power drills, metal cutting gear, heavy lifting, concrete cutting chainsaws and roping systems. “It’s really, really cold, it gets down to minus five, minus seven, it’s cold during the day, so we’re trying to keep people warm with access to clean water, food and shelter,” he said.
