ILOILO CITY — The Quezon Hall of West Visayas State University (WVSU), which served as a hub for teaching workforce training during the American colonial period in this city, has been fully restored.
ILOILO CITY — The Quezon Hall of West Visayas State University , which served as a hub for teaching workforce training during the American colonial period in this city, has been fully restored.The renovated facility was officially turned over by the Henry Sy Foundation and SM Foundation to WVSU on Wednesday.
Dr. Lydia Echauz, Henry Sy Foundation executive director, said the restoration was not only to preserve the building but also an investment in the potential of every student who will step into its doors.'Together, we are creating an environment that inspires academic excellence and fosters dreams that can reshape communities and uplift lives,' she said.The Quezon Hall was constructed in 1926. It served as the main building of the Iloilo Normal Institute, which was established to train Filipino teachers under the American colonial regime and the tutelage of the Thomasites.The recent project marks the building's first major renovation since its post-World War II reconstruction in 1946.The adaptive restoration project was made possible through a public-private partnership, with civil works for the building's preservation beginning earlier this July.'For two decades, the university experienced a period of limited progress receiving minimal infrastructure support To ensure the sustainability of our university we recognize the importance of seeking assistance,' said WVSU president Dr. Joselito Villaruz.Villaruz said the initiative for restoration connects healthy buildings and structures to an enhanced learning and working environment, supporting long-term educational investments.'The Henry Sy Foundation and SM Foundation are ideal partners for this restoration project because of their targeted social investments in education and drive for preserving Filipino heritage, including architectural landmarks,' he added.To maintain the building's historical integrity, the SM groups followed strict heritage preservation guidelines of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.The restoration project addressed both the structural and aesthetic requirements of the building, including the preservation of original wooden moldings, repair of concrete and steel elements, restoration of stairs, balusters, arches, and columns, repainting of architectural features and roof repairs.In addition to structural restoration, the project introduced improvements such as 24 newly refurbished classrooms equipped with modern desks and chairs, noise-minimizing floor tiles, repaired faculty rooms and other updated facilities.
