CBU students — both wearers and non-wearers of turbans — gathered to learn about what the headwear is, who wears it and why.
“A lot of people don’t know about what it is, what the significance is or what it actually means,” said Chatha. “We want to spread awareness of the pride, respect and honour that it represents.” But most of all, the turban is a symbol of honour. It typically represents the wearer’s good faith and character. Chatha said that in India, cab drivers who wear turbans are preferred because the passenger can expect good character and trust from the driver.
Before the event, organizers wrapped a blue turban on Thomas’s head, who helped arrange the event with the CBUSU. “What better way to have somebody talk about it than from the heart and from their experience?” said Thomas.While Sikhs and others may wear turbans more strictly, anyone is welcome to wear one — including any student passing through CBU curious about the turban’s meaning.
