Australia's national commissioner for domestic, family and sexual violence has told a coronial inquest that the issues driving violence are 'compounded' in the Northern Territory.
Rates of domestic, family and sexual violence in the Northern Territory are the highest in the country, because the issues which drive it are "compounded" in the NT, the coroner has heard.
The coroner has heard Indigenous women are eight times more likely to be assaulted than non-Indigenous women. However, the court has heard concerns that the $240,000 currently budgeted for the program will not be sufficient to see it succeed.NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy attended the inquest for two hours on Monday morning, the first time the top cop has watched the proceedings since it began in June.
He explained young men, aged 16 to 25, were too young for the sort of behaviour change programs currently running, but that there was evidence young people were using violence in their relationships.A landmark inquest looking at the state of domestic violence in the Northern Territory hears men's services are key to addressing the crisis.
