The Victoria Royals and Spokane Chiefs have spent the past two seasons in the nether regions of the Western Hockey League, but a modest move up could be happening.
The Victoria Royals and Spokane Chiefs have spent the past two seasons in the nether regions of the Western Hockey League grasping for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference, with the Chiefs winning out on the last day over the Royals in 2021-22 and both teams missing out completely last season.
The Chiefs are led by Berkly Catton, who will be a high first-round selection in the 2024 NHL draft, despite being five-foot-11 and 163 pounds. The Hockey News, Yahoo Sports and Sam Cosentino of Sportsnet all have Catton going fourth overall behind Mack Celebrini of Boston University, Cole Eiserman of the U.S. U-18 program and Ivan Demidov of St. Petersburg of the KHL while the Elite Prospects and The Hockey Writers sites have Catton ranked sixth overall.
“Being a small player you’ve got to be very competitive and fast all over the ice to make yourself be an impact player. That’s what are seeing so far and what they should be expecting moving forward,” said Pasternak.
