Beth House is the Dementia Friendly Community Lead with the Alzheimer Society. - CONTRIBUTEDA new initiative has been underway at the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia: Dementia Friendly Communities. We’re committed to connecting with key groups across the province to make Nova Scotia more dementia friendly.

Being dementia friendly means that spaces are more inclusive, supportive and accessible for everybody. It means that we recognize our social responsibility to support all members of our community. If you’re interested in how to make your space more dementia friendly, please connect with the society. When community members are educated about dementia and know that a person living with dementia may sometimes experience the world differently, they can better support them. While social support is a key element of a dementia-friendly community, the physical environment also plays a major role.

The changes don’t need to be costly or hard to implement. You can find helpful tip sheets with more suggestions at alzheimer.ca/dementiafriendlycanada.
